Why Waist Training is a Waste of Time!

Waist Training! It seems to be everywhere you turn these days, popping up on your Instagram feeds every other day, waist trainers are all the rage in the celebrity world and among women all over the world! However I was very curious as to whether or not they work and more importantly is waist training safe?!

It’s hard to get away from celebrities posting photos of themselves in these seemingly torturous contraptions, everybody from the Kardashians to Ice T’s wife Coco to Jessica Alba claims they can help you drop excess weight and shrink your waistline in a cinch (pun intended)

So I decided to embark upon my own study as to whether or not they actually worked and scoured the web as well as consulted with personal trainers to see if these really were the magic cure to a tighter more toned midsection or whether they are simply a huge “waist” of money(see what I did there?)


Women everywhere are flocking to waist trainers like a model to the latest diet pill, with promises of melting off inches, burning unwanted fat, and giving you that oh so desirable hourglass figure. However after a great deal of research they seem to do more harm than good, and the only weight loss that really seems to result from wearing them is because they make you so physically uncomfortable and squished that your body can’t even handle swallowing food.

You might as well hire somebody to follow you around and slap food out of your hand before it slides down your throat. You’d definitely lose weight!


Kim Kardashian captioned a photo of her waist training on Instagram saying “Snatching my waist and looking cute all at the same time!!!,” and her sister Khloe Kardashian captioned an Instagram selfie of her in a comic book-patterned waist trainer “I definitely feel like a superhero in this waist shaper!

Well apparently feeling like a superhero can come with some Not So Super Side Effects including these Waist Training issues

  • Severe Discomfort
  • Back Acne,
  • Acid Reflux
  • Heart Burn
  • Passing Out Due to the Lack of Ability to Take Full Deep Breaths!


Ummmm No thanks you!

Celebrity trainer Nicole Glor says that wearing a waist trainer on a regular basis can actually decrease core strength which is the exact opposite of what you want! People also claim that wearing one while working out will give you better results. However I promise you it won’t!!

If anything it will restrict your ability to have full mobility while exercising, compromising your form for certain exercises putting you at a higher risk for injury. source

According to this study air flow can be restricted up to 29% while wearing a corset, and while advocates of the waist trainer say it helps you sweat more and thus burn more calories it is just not true.

This study showed that subjects’ perspiration decreased by up to 90% when wearing a waist trainer, that is at least 10% smaller than your waist circumference. Also circulation at the fingertips decreased by 36%. So you can’t breath well or totally feel your finger tips.. PASS!

Also as of last week the waist trainer that is the number one choice among the Kardashian clan is on the receiving end of a nasty lawsuit by a large group of women who claimed all the waist trainer did was take their money but left their fat behind.


The company is in trouble because women who have purchased the product are mad that they don’t live up to the promises on the website saying,

“Waist training is a gradual process of waist reduction using our corset. Wearing a waist cinching corset…. can radically reduce your waist size…. permanently getting rid of unwanted inches around your waist. Waistgangsociety high quality Reshaping waist shaper is a unique latex material, which attacks unwanted fat and impurities within your body. Our reshaping line will strengthen your core all the while improving your posture. The thermogenesis created within your body will allow your body to rid itself of harsh toxins and impurities, through perspiration” source


Well that is a total load of bullshit, and the claim that it can help to permanently get rid of body fat is just Not True!  Other than liposuction or a great diet/exercise program nothing will help you lose unwanted fat.


Everybody these days is looking for a quick fix without having to put in any of the work! Wearing this ancient torture device for extended periods of time can actually cause your organs damage, your ribs to crack or bruise, and your lungs to be so compressed that you pass out. So Not Worth It!


Get off your butt, take off that waist trainer and get moving! A healthy diet and exercise routine is the ONLY thing that is going to give you the shape you are looking for, and it will be a much much healthier and more maintainable weight loss than any temporary redistribution of fat might bring about!

Also you can’t spot reduce! Trainers have been saying this since the Suzanne Somers Thigh Master promised to give you toned and fat free thighs!  You can’t just say “oh I’ll wear this and move the fat from my stomach and it will be gone” you can’t just pop on a waist trainer and say goodbye to your belly! It will still be there long after you take it off


Many people claim that wearing them while working out can help you lose weight in a short period of time, and while you will sweat more for sure it is not safe, and the results of water weight loss are temporary, it will all come back!


Barry’s Bootcamp celebrity trainer extraordinaire Matty Maggiacomo said that “It’s a quick fix…. but in no way a healthy one. The lungs should expand to their fullest during cardio, especially during an intense workout like Barry’s. My advice is simple: If you want a slim waist and six-pack abs, stick to a diverse exercise regimen and eat well.” source


I completely agree, so please for the love of all that is Kardashian stop waist training and go to the gym!

    Thank you so very much this is what I thought!!! Someone on my insta is doing that don’t see why they don’t just do some ab exercises instead. I was going to waist train years ago till I read about the health issues now I pole dance instead to keep fit and actually build a better body…
