So What Exactly is Going On with Instagram? Is there some secret new algorithm we all have to be worried about or not? Will people still see the photo I posted of my organic lunch yesterday?

Well….. calm your tits people I’m hear to tell you what’s up!

So first thing’s first, Is the Instagram Algorithm Changing?

The short is answer is yes…but the new feature is only in the testing phase right now

Instagram is basically trying to figure out what photos to show you based on what it thinks you really want to see, rather than just showing you a laundry list of photos you probably don’t really care about purely because they are in chronological order!

From what you probably saw on Instagram yesterday with everybody acting like the end is nigh and you need to panic and beg your followers to turn on your post notifications or they won’t ever see anything your post every again, this simply isn’t true.

According to this source that directly contacted Instagram asking about how the new algorithm is going to work this is what was said

“Your feed will soon order posts so that you’ll see the moments we believe you care about first. As we begin, we’re focusing on optimizing the order — all the posts will still be there, just in a different order … The ordered feed will take into account a number of signals such as likes, comments, and searches, as well as the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, the timeliness of the posts, and your relationship to the person posting.”

Basically Instagram is trying to help you and personalize your feed. You know how when you go on Facebook and you tend to see updates from people whom you interact with first on your feed? That happened back in 2009 when Facebook decided to show you posts first based on their popularity, and did people freak out about that? Well I was a junior in high school and don’t necessarily remember, but I don’t feel like it was anything like what I witnessed on Instagram yesterday!

Instagram co founder and chief executive Kevin Systrom claims that “On average, people miss about 70 percent of the posts in their Instagram feed… What this is about is making sure that the 30 percent you see is the best 30 percent possible.” source

So unless you live on Instagram or you are willing to scroll back through hours and hours worth of photos you are going miss a lot of the posts from your friends that you might really want to see!

This new update sounds like a good idea, but that’s just me! Instagram is fully aware that some people are not going to be too happy about this change but relax because it is going to be gradually rolled out over time not all at once, so get your panties out of a bunch and let this make you want to work harder to interact with your friends on Instagram, get more likes, share more relevant content if you are a business or brand to stay present on your followers news feeds and try not to freak out!

Facebook survived this change and you will too! So cool it with the “Turn on my post notifications or I might have a total mental breakdown right now” type of images(I totally posted one too just saying but after looking into it more and understanding the algorithm and how it is going to be integrated into Instagram I took it down!)

You can also get around the update when it does roll out fully by turning on post notifications for friends or companies/bloggers/etc. that you simply don’t want to miss but please don’t sound so desperate about it! It will all be ok and we will get through this trying time on social media together
