The Not So Skinny McDonald’s Shamrock Shake and a Delicious Healthy Alternative!

IMG_2292

So everybody knows that when you start seeing a million McDonald’s Shamrock Shake advertisements on television or in a magazine that St. Patrick’s Day must be right around the corner! Well today is the day and while I definitely love treating myself I can’t justify drinking the McCafe Shamrock Shake that has an almost cult like following.

If you are reading this post than I hope that you have come searching for a healthier alternative to a classic shake that you might like to enjoy this time of year, but don’t even think about pulling up to that drive through and ordering a Shamrock Shake, or as I like to call it the Cellulite Fat Filled Load of Crap Shake.

The Shamrock Shake might be a rather basic biatch kind of drink but it isn’t really as basic as you might think. When you think of an ice cream shake you usually think that people keep it pretty simple,  ice cream, some kind of syrup for flavoring, whipped cream and a nice sugary maraschino cherry, right? WRONG!

While McDonald’s isn’t exactly known as the mecca of Health and Wellness but this gross shake with obscure additives and harmful toxic chemicals really takes the cake(or the shake! Too punny?)

While the festive shake might remind you of leprechaun debauchery a la the naughty leprechauns that are shown in kids tv shows and books who supposedly sneak into your house in the middle of the night and make a mess(basically my dog all the time) seasonal and fun it anything but simple and the ingredients actually scare the crap out of me! It contains a staggering 33 ingredients total including obscure additives and dangerous chemicals. Check out the Shamrock Shake Nutritional Information

A Small 12 oz. McDonalds Shamrock Shake contains contains around 530 calories, 15 grams of fat, 10 grams of super harmful saturated fat, and 1 gram of trans fat which has basically been banned from being put in foods that are sold so why the heck is it in this shake? And a staggering 73 grams of sugar! To put it in perspective, a regular soda has 44 grams of sugar, so this is almost double that, and this is only in a SMALL!!

DISGUSTING to the MAX!

So I am here to give you the recipe for an amazing alternative shake!! I have coined the name the SKINNY LEPRECHAUN SHAKE! Clever no?!

Ingredients

¾ cup of fat free frozen vanilla yogurt or dairy free/paleo/etc. ice cream whatever you prefer. I used Artic Zero to make mine because it only has 50 calories in a cup.

½ cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk

1/8 teaspoon of mint extract or peppermint extract(or a few mint leaves for added freshness)

3 to 5 drops of green food coloring, natural if possible(I use Whole Foods brand)

1 packet of Stevia or your favorite sugar substitute or just add a tbsp. of regular sugar(1 won’t kill you but the crap ton in that shake might over time)

1/3 cup of crushed ice

Dash of Vanilla Extract

Instructions

  1. Combine all shake ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth and no lumps remain.  Stop blender and stir with a spoon to help blend everything. Blend again for a few seconds.
  1. Pour into a tall glass (maybe a frosted one that’s been kept in the freezer for a few minutes…yum!) and top with Fat Free Cool Whip and some Fresh Cut Strawberries!

Now go out there and have an amazing St. Patrick’s Day you crazy kids!! Remember to always sip skinny!

XOXO Harriet
